PECS
Picture Exchange Communication System
A program which teaches children with autism and other communication challenges to initiate communication. PECS is primarily used with individuals who are non verbal or have limited speech capacity to assist them in acquiring functional communication skills.
PECS begins with teaching a child to give a picture of a highly motivating item to a person in exchange for that item, therefore teaching the purpose of communication as a two way interaction. A child can move through 6 phases eventuating on the expression of feelings, preferences and experiences within conversation.
