Positive Behaviour Support

Children with autism and related disabilities commonly engage in behaviour that interferes with their ability to fully participate in family life, educational programs, or community activities.Challenging behaviours are a part of every parenting experience, but sensory, communication and receptive issues can present a unique set of circumstances for the parents of an autistic child.

Children may engage in behaviour that is harmful to themselves or others, or simply refuse to participate in important family and educational activities. When behaviour interferes with a child's ability to engage in family and community life, it is problem behaviour. Leap into learning specializes in improving problem behaviours that are interfering with family life.  Leap into Learning offers positive behaviour support programs designed to increase desired behaviours and decrease undesired behaviours, primarily based on the reinforcement principals of applied behaviour analysis. Sarah has many years of experience in behaviour support specifically to children with autism.  Behvaiours can be modified and reduced through consistently teaching replacement skills and empowering children and parents.

We will initially conduct a comprehensive assessment with your child then develop goals and an intervention plan.

Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA)

An FBA consists of interviewing critical members of your child’s family and team (e.g., school staff) and then observing your child in situations and environments in which the problem behaviour is most likely to occur. Interview and observational information then determine the primary causes or functions of your child’s behaviour. The FBA concludes with a written report outlining the functions of the child’s problem behaviour as well as a concrete intervention plan designed to address these behaviours. A Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) is a validated, scientific process for understanding why children engage in problem behaviour. FBA's enable us to develop Interventions that effectively reduce problem behaviour because they truly address a child’s motivations for acting in a disruptive or non-compliant manner. Leap into learning can then provide education for your family and other key people on how to understand and manage these problem behaviours. Progress will be closely monitored so you can see the incremental improvements in your child's behaviour.
